Kanook is lost: The Story
"Carla,
Just wanted to thank you again for your support over the last
several hours and more importantly your commitment to breeding Whippets of
both sound body and most importantly MINDS.
At 5:15 pm Sunday evening January 4, Kody, Kanook, Snapper and
I walked out to the barn to feed the horses as we do every morning and night.
The whippets had just finished dinner, so this was a potty break and pony
feeding. As usual, Kanook's first order of business was on top the hay
stacks hunting mice She jumped off, and as I threw in some hay for the
first horse, she was going pee outside the barn door. I put hay in for
the other three horses and shut the barn door. Called for Kody and
Kanook, they were nowhere to be seen. I figured they ran around the
front of the house looking for cotton tails. As I came around front, I
noticed the Borzoi down at the front end of their field looking across to the
120 acres. It was starting to get dark and I saw some movement out in
the field. I ran back to the house and got in my car, looked at the time
5:21, how could they disappear that fast, drove to the far side of the field
calling the dogs, Kody finally came to the car, but no Kanook. I spent
the next 2 hours driving around the property and knocking on doors. I
was hysterical at this point. We had had 4 inches of snow Saturday morning and
the temperature was already down to 14 degrees. Because we were just
running out to the barn to feed, I hadn't put sweaters or jackets on the dogs.
I had to find her, there is no way she could survive the cold night or the
coyotes.
The night never got any better. I came back home to
regroup. Before I headed out again, Mark suggested I make signs and we
would put them up while looking. I used the picture I sent you of her
first show weekend, where she was BOS both days, found it better to try to
describe her. Every one knows what a Lab is, Whippet usually draws a
blank on peoples faces. So off we were, more doors, more calling and
putting up signs within 5 miles surrounding the house.
By the time Mark talked me into returning home it was almost 10
pm and down to 7 degrees.
As I sat on the couch crying my eyes out, I knew I would never
see my beautiful puppy again. I dreaded making the call to you in the
morning.
I sat awake most of the night picturing Kanook, lost, confused
and freezing to death....and the coyotes.
As soon as the light came up this morning, looked out the
window and could not believe we were socked in with fog. Great, first
the dark, now the fog. I took off again in the car calling her. Nothing.
I came home and made more signs. After I called the
shelters when they opened at 9am, I planned on taking signs with her picture
to all the local vets. I left the information with Adams County and
Brighton shelters and headed for the house we moved from 2 months ago, just in
case.
As I left the driveway, I spotted 3 coyotes in the field about
the spot I found Kody the night before. In my heart I felt, they got a meal
there last night, guess they were back for more.
I was headed east when Mark called from work, hoping I would
say I found her. While on the call with him, another call came in.
Thinking it was the shelter, I switched over. The woman said she might
have my dog. She had called the Brighton shelter to report she had found
her and they had given her my number. I described Kanook to her, down to
her tattoo and scratched nose, the lady said yes to every question describing
her. I couldn't stop crying. I got direction turned around and
found her house.
I walked in the door to find Kanook sitting on the couch with
the woman's teenage daughters watching the news. I called her, she
jumped up and ran over to me, I picked her up and started crying, again.
I asked where they had found her, she said at the front door.
Around 7 pm, an hour and 45 minutes after I last saw her, they
heard noises at the door At first thinking it was the wind, they ignored it.
Finally one of the girls got up, opened the door and in walks Kanook, like she
had been there before.
She made her self at home, eating dinner, again (I had fed her
before she went astray) and spent the night in bed under the covers with the
oldest girl. They said when she came in the house it was as if she was
saying, "I was chasing this awesome rabbit, next thing I know, I
can't find Kody, it's dark and cold, I can't find my way home. Can I
stay here until my mom finds me?"
I tried to give them the reward money I had posted, but they
strongly refused. They said all they could think about was how worried I
was, thinking she was out in the cold all night. They were just happy to
find her her home.
Carla, I have no doubt that the sound temperament you are
committed to in your breeding program saved this girl's life. She had
the sense to find a house and beg to come in. There are three houses on
the street before this house. Who knows, she could have scratched at
those doors, got no response or got the door shut in her face before she came
to this house. She knew to find herself a door to let her in.
Here's a picture of her at home.
THANK YOU GOD for letting her find the right door to knock on!"
